Introduction
The string of pearls is a trailing succulent plant that originates from Southwest Africa. It grows long stems covered in swollen green leaves that look like balls or pearls which hang over the side of the pot. They are easy to care for and can be grown indoors or out.
String of Pearls general care
String of pearls is an easy to care for house plant. It can grow in a wide range of conditions and doesn’t require any special conditions. It is best grown in a hanging basket or on a shelf to see the long trailing vines. The plant also produces small white flowers when in season.
How often should I water String of Pearls
When to water String of Pearls is a common question. Because the leaves are full of water, string of pearls can go for long periods without needing water. Allow the soil to dry out between watering. Make sure your pot has a hole in it and that the soil is well draining. Water sparingly in Winter and more often in Summer.
Bright but indirect light
Like other indoor plants, string of pearls likes bright light. Indoors in a bright area or windowsill is ideal. If your house doesn't have much natural light it might be worth getting some LED Grow Lights to boost your light levels.They can be grown outdoors aswell or on your patio. If it is outside, protect it from too much harsh afternoon light by placing it in a partially shaded spot.
Standard temperature and humidity
String of pearls doesn’t have any special humidity requirements. Because they come from desert areas they like warmer temperatures. If your plant is outdoors and the temperature is expected to drop, you can bring it inside to protect it. Standard house temperatures are suitable but warmer areas are preferred.
How to propagate String of Pearls
String of pearls is easy to propagate like other succulents. Take a cutting of the stem and remove a few of the pearls from the bottom end. Either place the cutting in soil or lay it on the top and wait for the cutting to grow roots. Make sure the soil is well draining. Place rooted cuttings in plant pots when big enough.
Types of pearls
There are two main types of string of pearls; standard, with a light green colour and variegated, with a mix of green and white coloured pearls. The variegated plant is less common.
